US gyms and boutique studios in Marketboost-managed accounts pay $11–$29 USD per lead, and the deciding factor is not ad cost but show rate: about half of gym leads never visit without automated follow-up, versus roughly 70% attendance when a 60-second reply plus two reminders are in place. Google Ads captures people already looking for a gym near them; Meta Ads creates demand for a specific offer. The most profitable setup runs a low-friction trial offer, books a specific time slot, and measures cost per membership rather than cost per lead.

The offer decides the CPL

Generic 'join now' ads lose to a specific, time-boxed trial. The offers that consistently produce the lowest cost per membership give real access with a clear end date and a booked time, not an open-ended discount.

  • 7-day full access with a scheduled first class — best all-around performer.
  • Free intro / assessment session — strongest for personal training and boutique studios.
  • First month at a reduced rate with a commitment start date — best for big-box.
  • Avoid 'free week, come whenever': no booked slot means no show.

Google vs Meta for gyms

Google Ads covers 'gym near me', 'pilates studio [city]' and competitor-brand searches — existing demand, higher intent, higher CPC. Meta Ads is where you build volume with video of real classes and real members, which is why boutique studios often get their cheapest leads there.

Run both, but track them separately to the membership, not the lead: Meta usually wins on CPL and Google usually wins on close rate.

Follow-up sequence that lifts show rate

  • Minute 1: automated SMS/WhatsApp confirming the booked slot with the address and what to bring.
  • Hour 1: short personal message from a coach, by name.
  • 24 hours before: reminder with a one-tap reschedule option — reschedules are recovered revenue, not lost leads.
  • 2 hours before: final reminder.
  • No-show day: one re-offer with two concrete time options, then stop.

Acquisition math only works with retention

A $50 cost per membership is excellent at 14 months of average tenure and terrible at three. Before scaling spend, instrument churn: first-30-day attendance, class bookings per member per week and cancellation reasons. Paid ads amplify whatever your retention already is.

Frequently asked questions

What is a good cost per lead for a gym?

$11–$29 USD in most US markets depending on the model. Big-box gyms sit at the low end and personal-training or CrossFit offers at the high end because the ticket is larger.

How much should a gym spend on ads monthly?

$1,500–$4,000 USD per location is typical. Boutique studios can start around $1,000 if the offer is sharp and follow-up is automated.

Why do gym leads never show up?

Because nothing was scheduled and nobody replied fast. Leads without a booked time slot and a reply inside a few minutes show up roughly half as often as leads that get both.

Should gyms bid on competitor brand names?

It can work when your differentiator is clear (price, hours, class type), but expect lower conversion rates and higher CPCs. Keep it in its own campaign with a small budget so it cannot drain your core offer.

Is Meta or Google better for a new studio?

Meta first for a brand-new studio: nobody is searching your name yet and you need to create demand with video. Add Google once you have reviews and a Google Business Profile worth sending traffic to.

What should we measure instead of CPL?

Cost per membership and 90-day retained membership value. CPL alone rewards cheap unqualified leads that never join.
